OK so as a Yoga teacher I hear this all the time, ‘I would really love to try yoga but I’m just not flexible’. Being flexible to do yoga is a total urban myth. The myth has come from people seeing people in extreme advanced yoga poses that will never be a possibility for them or me included. Those people in those pictures have the bones and muscles for that pose and yes are able to get into it but hey this is not yoga!!!
People that are over flexible actually have to work harder on their mats to make sure that are not just hanging constantly into their joints, and if they’re not they should be as yoga could end up doing more damage to their bodies than good.
Flexibility is something that will come in time with your practise and this may mean that you can straighten your leg without your hammies screaming stop… its about taking time and having patience with your body.
Don’t let the stereotype of yoga put you off from trying, you never know it could be the best thing you ever you do!!
