Why should I practice Yoga when I’m Pregnant??
So you’re pregnant, now everyone and their dog seems to be giving you advice on what you should do and what you should eat. All of a sudden everyone wants to share their pregnancy and birth stories with you and now you’re overwhelmed and already hormonal, emotional and maybe just a little freaked out by it all.
Pregnancy is a journey and a journey that is completely different for each mama to be.
So why can Yoga be useful and beneficial to you? Well firstly, women have been giving birth for centuries and we as women are designed for childbirth. Prenatal Yoga is about tapping into our inner goddess and reminding us that we have the ability to do this.
The yoga poses or Asanas are adapted to allow space for baby so as not to cause harm to mama. It takes into account the new found softness a mama to be has during pregnancy (the rise in hormones not only affects your mood but also your physical structure) this is how the body adapts for pregnancy.
The classes build strength and stamina preparing mamas for childbirth. Breathing techniques are taught to teach mama to tap into her para-sympathetic nervous system that aids relaxation, which is important for labour. Yoga can also assist with balance as this can be a little off as baby starts to grow and becomes heavy, however, more importantly, it provides a time in the day where Mama can spend time bonding with her unborn baba. Life can still be pretty busy when you’re pregnant and mamas to be can become extremely tired so any time where they can relax and let go is really important.
A pre-natal yoga class creates a room full of mamas to be who can share their stories in an environment where they each understand you are on your own journey, they will share their tales of heartburn and cramp and each of them will, in turn, be racing to the toilet every 5 minutes however, it creates an understanding between each of you and puts a worried mama to be mind at rest knowing that yes you are on your own journey but you are not on your own.
